Faith is the heritage of Jesus. Whatever Jesus has done with words, works or teachings - nothing further is so characteristic for him as faith. Paul says in Galatians 3:23 "Before the faith came (Πρὸ τοῦ δὲ ἐλθεῖν τὴν πίστιν), we were held prisoners by the law..." He is talking about "faith in Jesus Christ." There was a time, faith does not exist, because Jesus does not exist. No word about Abraham, the "father of faith". He is not important enough to think of him, compared with Jesus who is faith.

A clear and short definition is given Hebrew 11:1 "Faith is realization of things hoped for, evidence of events not seen (Ἔστιν δὲ πίστις ἐλπιζομένων ὑπόστασις, πραγμάτων ἔλεγχος οὐ βλεπομένων)." Even the effects of faith are containing in these few words. But also the words are very pretentious. There is no place for missing effects. "Faith like a grain of mustard seed" describes very exactly the teaching of Jesus about faith. Faith is very small in his beginning but grows unnoticed to great power that is destroying every fortress of the devil. Sickness and disease are such fortresses. All three Synoptics - Matthew, Mark and Luke - are telling about this "grain of mustard seed".
